My Story:
A little about me: My name is Mildred Viviana, and I'm 33 years old, originally from Ecuador. I grew up with my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and brother, while my parents lived in the United States throughout my childhood until I was 16 years old. During my teenage years, my niece was born, and I became her primary caregiver. She was like my own baby, and I couldn't wait to finish school to spend time with her. Two years later, my nephew was born, and I also helped care for him. We were always together, going to the store and learning the ropes of childcare together.
Through caring for them, I learned how to change diapers, feed them, bathe them, take their temperature when they were sick, and engage in playful activities. They were my partners in crime when we wanted to indulge in sweets or play pranks, and I often reassured my aunt that I would take care of them while she went to work. Years later, I got married and had a daughter of my own. With her, I could finally put into practice all that I had learned from caring for my niece and nephew. Diaper changes, feeding, bathing— we did it all together, with my niece and nephew visiting us daily to play as a family of four.
During this phase of my life, I was still unsure of what I was good at, as I dedicated myself entirely to managing our home and raising my daughter. It wasn't until my daughter started preschool at the age of three that I began to realize my passion for childcare. Each day, a piece of my heart went with her to school, and I constantly worried about not being able to care for her during the eight hours she was away. During a parent-teacher meeting, one of her teachers reassured me by saying, "Mrs. Vivi, Abby is your daughter, but from the moment she enters the classroom, she's also my 'daughter,' and I treat all the children here as my own."
That statement stayed with me, and soon after, an opportunity arose for my husband, daughter, and me to move to the United States. Initially starting in construction and kitchen jobs, I longed to be in a place where I could fully enjoy life and be myself, especially in a new country where I was starting fresh and believed language barriers would pose challenges. I found joy in smiling and saying hello to children I encountered, and one day, I decided to pursue work in childcare facilities where I could make a positive impact, share love, and teach a bit of my culture and language.
I started working in a Spanish immersion daycare as a substitute staff member, viewing it as the best opportunity to learn about all aspects of childcare and interact with children of all ages. I was welcomed warmly by the children, and I quickly became fond of them. Eventually, I transitioned to a challenging role as an assistant teacher in a Pre-K classroom. While the initial weeks were about mutual adjustment, we eventually formed a strong team, and I learned a great deal from them and the families I had the pleasure of getting to know.
I began studying to obtain my CDA certification and was offered a change in classroom assignment to a preschool setting. I embraced this new challenge, convinced that I would give my all without losing my essence, ensuring that the children felt loved, accepted, and respected, receiving the same from me in return. It was a journey of immense learning, but every day, as I greeted the children with a cheerful "Good morning," I understood perfectly the sentiment expressed by my daughter's teacher years ago and the promise I made to my aunt in my adolescence: "From this door inward, your children are my children," meaning they would be protected, cared for, loved, respected, and taught a bit of who I am as we navigate through the journey of learning together.
